artistic mission

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

With three photos to be exhibited and sold in an upcoming art show in Albany, I thought it was important to begin drafting a mission / constitution for my work. The first draft is below:

Global

1. All works may be shared without my knowledge.
2. All works may be remixed, so long as I am aware.
3. If any commercial gain is made, that gain must be shared with me.
4. Attribution to me must always accompany distribution or exhibition of works or derivative mixes.

Photography

1. Only one dimensional representation of a photograph may be sold and must be labeled appropriately with my name, the date, the photograph’s dimensions, and the word “SOLD”. Id est, only one 8×10, one 5×7, etc.
2. Film negatives may not be copied or sold, but may be digitized.
3. No commercial gain can be made from digital photographs. Any commercial gain made from digital representations of film negatives must be applied to further creation of film negatives (e.g. supplies) or donated to a non-profit.

Music

1. No commercial gain may be made from digital distribution, unless distribution format is lossless.
2. Only one track from a completed album may be distributed independently from that album as a single. All works may be exhibited independently of a complete album.

Writing

1. All works may be distributed and exhibited in any form.

Joe Andoe of Jubilee City responds

Joe Andoe sent me a response to my video.

Devin,

Thank you for the review of my book on your vlog.

And I glad you liked it.

Most dudes are cool with it but it seems the female readers are split they like it or they say I am a disgusting woman hater.

But they can’t point to any one thing.

It’s a mystery.

My publisher Harper Collins (they passed it on) really liked your ideal of the volg and hopes it takes off.

Best

Joe Andoe

Why asked if I could post the message:

DEVIN,

GO FOR IT.

JOE

The Music Lesson - Victor Wooten

Monday, August 25th, 2008

A true musician…plays Music and uses particular instruments as tools to do so.

A true writer can write using a typewriter, a pen, a pencil, or anything else that he chooses. You wouldn’t call him a pencil writer, would you? Your understanding that the writing utensil is just a tool allows you to see past it and into the realness of what he is - a writer. The story is in the writer, is it not? Or is it in the pencil? Your problem is this: you have been trying to tell your story with a bass guitar instead of through it.

- Victor Wooten, The Music Lesson

What are you telling your story through?

Glen Hansard’s Swell Season at SPAC

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Last night Glen Hansard’s Swell Season (including Markéta Irglová) were at SPAC. Due to technical issues with sound, and presumably power, the band came on over twenty minutes late. During Glen’s first song the sound issues showed themselves, Glen promptly unplugged and walked to the front of the stage. His powerful voice filled the interior of SPAC, although the lawn might have struggled to hear much of anything. As the band joined him the issues persisted; additionally, one of Glen’s strings broke. Glen mentioned, ‘it’s not us that sucks.’ With awful balances, mics cutting, and pops here and there the band played for a very truncated set.

Only true musicians like Glen, Markéta and the rest of the band members, could overcome these mishaps to put on an awesome show. Other acts included Levon Helm and Bob Dylan, but Hansard was clearing the highlight of the night. Maybe it was his Dublin accent, but he rocked my socks.

flakes

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I just finished watching Flakes a small film from 2007 written in part by Karey Kirkpatrick, who also worked with Douglass Adams on The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005).

I think it deserves more than the 6.5 it earned on IMDb. Flakes is a cereal bar that is overtaken by a man who wants to take it corporate. In the end, love triumphs. Love of what? You’ll have to watch to find out. The music is great, unlike There Will Be Blood (my last film watched, I’d be rolling in my grave if I were Upton Sinclair). If you like the small time, independent feel in your films, watch this film.
